Judy Mills was born in Stephenville Crossing in
1958 but spent most of her life in Fleur De Lys, NL. She remembers as a
child wanting to be an artist or an author but had no access to art
supplies. When she was a young woman, she worked at a number of different
jobs, Town Clerk (she gave it up because she because to deaf for the job),
labourer, and fish plant worker. She had two children, she was in her 40’s
when they left home and she decided to finally follow her dream and attended
Visual Arts at the College of the North Atlantic in Stephenville. The first
year was learning the basics of a number of different art mediums and loved
them all. In the second year, she was taught realistic oil painting. She
enjoyed it while in school but after graduation she soon found the realistic
style stressed her out and stopped painting at all for about 20 years. She
then worked mostly in camps out West, cleaning. When she was 53 she
divorced, a couple years after that she got a Cochlear Implant which was
life changing. It gave me the confidence to work on the offshore oil rigs
for a catering company on a call in basis. Then Covid happened. During
lockdown she decided to give watercolours a try and loved it! It wasn’t
long before she was selling her first and still most popular print of
dancing Puffins. Her Seagull painting hangs at an art gallery in Corner
Brook, Picture It In A Frame. Judy also wrote and is currently illustrating
a children’s book. She doesn’t know if it will be published but fells it
fulfills her childhood dream of beating both an artist and an author.
