Ian Sparkes was born in St. John’s
Newfoundland in 1946. He was educated at Prince of Wales College
in St. John’s, Military College in Victoria, B.C.; and Memorial
University of Newfoundland, where he achieved a Bachelor of
Commerce in 1969 and a Master of Education in 1973. In 1973, Ian
began a career teaching art and social studies at MacPherson Jr.
High and Booth Memorial High in St. John's. At the same time, Ian
began painting in watercolour and acrylic which quickly developed
into a part time profession. His works capture the rich colors and
light patterns of Newfoundland community life and their
fascinating moods. His character and group portraits are often a
social commentary on the effects of long years of hard work in
fishing communities and the spirit of freedom and resolve which
remains. Ian retired from teaching in 1999 to devote himself
full-time to a painting career. In April of 2000, Ian had a very
successful exhibition in Toronto entitled "Outport
Moods". Ian's painting “The Last RCMP Dog Team Patrol”
was chosen by the Royal Canadian Mint for the 1994 Commemorative
Silver Dollar celebrating the 25th anniversary of the RCMP
Northern Dog Team Patrol. A large audience appreciates Sparke's
paintings. His work can be found in corporate and private
collections throughout Newfoundland and across Canada.
